MY WLA STORY + WHY I WANT TO PAY IT FORWARD
I am amazed by wildlife every day, I have been walking in the woods with my dad since I can remember. My mom found out about Wildlife Leadership Academy through a group homeschool Facebook post and thought I would like it. I came to the WLA in 2022 as a student of Gobblers. Before going to the field school, I thought I knew everything about turkeys from hunting and eating them with my dad and family. When I attended, I quickly realized that I hardly knew anything about turkeys. I was so amazed about this field school. I tried to apply everything I learned during the upcoming hunting seasons. I could not wait until the next summer when I was awarded the position of Youth Mentor at the 2023 Bass field school. I felt welcomed backed with familiar faces and learned so much about the watersheds around me. I then got awarded the Ralph Abele Excellence in Outreach award for the highest-scoring outreach record book. I was so excited to see what I would do for WLA 2024. I signed up to be an Apprentice of 2024 Ursids but was also awarded to be a Youth Mentor for Bucktails. I was so blessed to be able to attend four WLA field schools.
I have done Pay It Forward for the past two years. When I attended as a student and as an Apprentice I was awarded scholarships to attend. The Pay It Forward program is important to me because Pay It Forward helps children, like me that has a passion for the outdoors, to attend such an amazing field school. WLA brings in professional game biologists to come and teach us. I was amazed to be taught by someone who did what they were teaching. I keep participating in Pay It Forward because low-income families should have the opportunity to be taught by professionals and enhance their soul fire for the outdoors.
