MY WLA STORY + WHY I WANT TO PAY IT FORWARD
I started working with the Wildlife Leadership Academy in 2018 as a team leader at the Brookies camp. I received an email from another organization that I worked with. Every year since, I have come back every summer to be a mentor to these young students. My favorite part of camp so far was this year being able to see a live bear being processed. I even got to help with coming up with a number on how healthy the bear was. Being able to touch the bear is something that I will never forget. I love being able to see these young people experience the same things. The joy on their faces being able to help with processing the bear was priceless. Learning about the factors it takes for the female bears to reproduce was fascinating. Every summer that I come back – I learn something new about a new species or the same species; which is nice because you are learning right beside the students.
I am participating in Pay It Forward again this year because I want to be able to help a student come to camp. I also stay involved with WLA because of how much I believe in the program. Every year I see students who are very shy at the beginning of the week and by the end of the week they are delivering their teams statement during town hall or they are answering the trivia questions for their team. I also get to see students who are passionate about the field being able to connect with industry leaders.
