MY WLA STORY + WHY I WANT TO PAY IT FORWARD
I am alumna of the Wildlife Leadership Academy’s bass field school for conservation ambassadors, which I attended summer of 2024. Throughout the week, my fellow students and I were given the opportunity to be stretched through hands-on activities, informative lectures, professional networking, and community outreach. WLA’s mission is to empower students like me to become active advocates for conservation in their communities, and during my time at camp, I was consistently blown away by exactly how dedicated the WLA staff are to fulfilling this mission. I want to make sure that next year, more kids will have the same experience I did!
I was sitting on my bedroom floor the night I got home from camp when I first took a look in the bag I received during the closing ceremony at the end of my WLA experience. I was absolutely blown away by how many resources the camp staff had packed into our outreach bags! WLA gives each student everything they need to learn and complete their outreach, and none of it would be possible without the generous donations of people who may have only heard about WLA for the very first time by reading a paragraph just like this one. This is why I decided to take part in Pay It Forward; I wanted to be a part of that!

Here, two of my teammates and I are counting macroinvertebrates as part of a stream assessment. This is a very simple way of assessing a stream’s health, since certain macroinvertebrate species are very sensitive to drastic changes in water quality. Inspired by these small creatures, my team called ourselves the “Rolling Stoneflies.”
Although I had never fished before, I somehow still managed to catch a total of five fish when we visited Bald Eagle State Park! While at the park, we also spoke with professionals, constructed turtle resting platforms, and learned about different kinds of lures. At the end of the week, each camper received a fishing rod from one of WLA’s donors.
During camp, we were challenged to complete several large projects. In this photo, I am shown working on my trifold presentation on bass in the Susquehanna. Since camp, I have set up this trifold at various of my local libraries as a part of my outreach.
Since leaving camp, one of my favorite forms of outreach has swiftly become nature photography. Here is one of my favorites! I took this photo, captured by my cell phone camera, on August 17th shortly after getting off work.
