Each field school, students are grouped into 4 teams. Throughout the week, your team will work together to complete projects and compete for the chance to attend an educational Winner’s Weekend – a reward retreat in August.
Each team consists of:
5 students
1 Youth Mentor (a returning student)
1 Adult Mentor
WHERE YOU WILL SLEEP
Students are housed in cabins throughout the week. Each cabin sleeps up to 6 people and includes a bathroom. All gender cabin options are available.
WHAT WILL YOU EAT
While at field school, a catering company serves delicious and plentiful meals. We also provide a variety of snacks throughout the day. We are happy to accommodate food allergies and dietary considerations.
WHERE YOU WILL LEARN
As part of their Conservation Ambassador Training, students enhance their knowledge base of natural history, ecology, conservation, and more through detailed lectures in the classroom and hands-on activities outdoors in the field. Students will then use what they learned in their post field school outreach projects.
WHERE YOU WILL PLAY
You will spend time outside learning field techniques, assessing habitats, and growing your leadership skills while completing team building activities.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Your week at field school will consist of a mix of indoor and outdoor activities. Click on the button below to view a sample packing list and get an idea of what you would need to bring with you!
After graduating from the Academy’s summer field school, you will return to your community to engage, educate and inspire others about conservation. The Academy will offer support as you conduct outreach projects, sharing your knowledge through education, service, media engagement, creative arts, and outdoor mentorship. You will learn more about outreach at field school!
Please leave your electronic devices at home. Due to the immersive nature of the experience and a lack of cell phone service, students should not bring their cell phones. A phone will always be made available to you upon request to call home at any time. Electronic devices needed to manage health/learning concerns are
permitted and should be arranged by contacting the Executive Director.
We do not allow students to bring a camera or to take photos on their personal devices. Our photographer will capture your experience throughout the week and share a link to all the photos after field school.
