This week’s flashback blog was written in 2022 by Kala D., a 2008 Bucktails alumni. Kala earned her bachelor’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation from California University of Pennsylvania. In 2019, she graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a master’s degree in Environmental Science.
After attending our summer field school, the Academy encourages youth to return to their communities and undertake outreach projects. These projects involve sharing their newfound knowledge through education, service, media engagement, creative arts, and outdoor mentorship.
One of the most exciting things about receiving the outreach record book submissions is seeing how each student puts their own unique spin on their projects. Some students enjoy mentoring others in nature, while others prefer to give presentations about their Academy experience. Today we are highlighting the work of Alana M., a Bucktails alum who took the creative arts category by storm with an extensive photography portfolio capturing the beauty of the places she has visited and the things she has seen.
Our first-ever Stepping Stones Program was off the hook this past weekend! In partnership with the Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Association, the Stepping Stones Program used fly fishing as a recreational pathway for students to learn about fisheries biology, conservation, and leadership skills development.

In honor of Mother’s Day this weekend, we are taking a look back at the the history of Margaret Murie, the Grandmother of the conservation movement, and how her efforts helped to save important areas of wilderness.
