Our January student of the month is Jonathan Simak – he is an avid fisherman, and has been working hard on his outreach. He has attended a variety of educational presentations, in a number of exotic locations! He traveled to the Czech Republic, Poland, the Chesapeake Bay, and Slovakia to study all sorts of flora and fauna, and to assist biologists with their research.
Jonathan also volunteered as a counselor for the Brookside Nature Center “Nature’s Laboratory” camp, volunteered at Meadowside Nature Center’s fall apple festive, and collects trash at Gunpowder Falls to keep it clean and tidy – making sure the environment is safe for the local wildlife and enjoyable for all! He is also a member of the Student Bay Advisory Council (run through the Chesapeake Bay Foundation), which encourages students to get involved in conserving the Bay’s ecosystem through various hands-on projects.
In his spare time, Jonathan also exercises his creative side through woodcarving, making a variety of outstanding projects. Starting with different types of fish (inspired by his passion for fishing), and branching out to a very useful office supply holder, Jonathan displays off his many talents:
Jonathan is working hard on his commitments as a Conservation Ambassador – continuing his education after the field school, as well as dedicating himself to helping teach others and support a sustainable local environment. We are proud of his efforts, and know he will continue to act as an Ambassador for the conservation message in the future. Excellent work, Jonathan!!
