Outreach Highlight: Asher’s Way of Casting Conservation Forward

This week’s Outreach Highlight features Asher, a Stepping Stones Program and Brookies alum. Asher took a hands-on, creative approach to conservation outreach, using art, media, education, and mentorship to share his passion for fishing, fly tying, and aquatic conservation with others.

Asher contributed to education-focused outreach by writing an original article for the Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited, delivering presentations, and supporting chapter events with trifold displays. He also stayed engaged throughout the school year by participating in activities with his high school’s fly fishing club, reaching fellow students through club meetings and events.

Asher attended multiple presentations and workshops, like this water sampling event.

In addition, Asher spent significant time engaged in mentored fishing, working directly with others to build skills, confidence, and appreciation for aquatic resources. Through these hands-on experiences, he taught fishing techniques, shared conservation ethics, and helped participants develop a deeper connection to local waterways.

In the creative arts category, Asher submitted 24 original projects to the Lycoming County Fair. He also tied and shared handmade fishing flies, blending craftsmanship with outdoor education.

Asher expanded his reach even further through media outreach, creating content for his YouTube channel where he shares fishing experiences and fly-tying techniques with a public audience. His videos reached more than 200 viewers, helping connect people to the outdoors through relatable storytelling.

Asher’s created this painting and captured nature photos as creative arts projects.

Across all outreach categories, Asher demonstrated how personal interests can be transformed into meaningful conservation action. His work reached youth, community members, and conservation organizations, leaving a lasting impact through his commitment to conservation and to others. We are so proud of Asher’s outreach accomplishments and we can’t wait to see where his fishing adventures take him next!
